The PMS product guide: 8 things that can really help

October 20, 2026 ยท 8 min read ยท By the WePMS team

Walk down any pharmacy aisle and you'll find dozens of products promising to "fix" your period. Some help. Many don't. We dug through what's out there and picked eight worth knowing about, from a chocolate made for your cycle to old-school heat that still works wonders.

โญ Our #1 pick

1Girl Chocolate

๐ŸŒ— Some proof (for key ingredients)

What it is: A chocolate made for your cycle. Each bar includes ingredients that are often studied for PMS: magnesium (glycinate) and vitamin B6, plus raspberry leaf, ashwagandha, DIM and black pepper to help absorption.

Why we love it: It turns a craving you already have into a daily ritual. It's vegan, gluten-free and kosher, sweetened with coconut sugar, with no artificial sweeteners. The brand offers a 90-day money-back guarantee.

Honest note: Magnesium and vitamin B6 have some research behind them for PMS. The other ingredients have less. Like all supplements, its claims haven't been evaluated by the FDA.

Price: about $93 for the 8-bar Period Relief Kit, then $33 a month, as of October 2026. Check their site for current prices.

2Heat wraps & heating pads

โœ… Strong proof (for cramps)

Heat relaxes the muscles of the uterus. In studies, a heat wrap on the lower belly eased cramps about as well as a common pain reliever. Stick-on wraps like ThermaCare Menstrual let you get the same comfort at work or school. A simple heating pad or hot water bottle works at home.

Cost: low ยท Never sleep on a heating pad, and don't put heat directly on bare skin for long.

3Over-the-counter pain relievers

โœ… Strong proof (cramps, aches, headaches)

Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) are called NSAIDs. They lower the body chemicals that cause cramps. Timing matters: they work best taken at the very first sign of cramps, or a day before you expect them, rather than once the pain is strong.

Follow the label. Skip NSAIDs if you have stomach ulcers, kidney problems or bleeding issues, or are pregnant, and ask a pharmacist if unsure.

4Calcium

โœ… Strong proof (mood, bloating, cravings)

Calcium is one of the best-studied remedies for PMS. In a well-known study, women taking 1,200 mg a day had noticeably fewer symptoms. Food comes first (yogurt, milk, fortified plant milk, tofu), and a supplement can fill the gap.

Cost: low ยท Ask a doctor first if you have kidney stones or take other medicines.

5TENS period-pain devices

๐ŸŒ— Some proof (for cramps)

Small wearable gadgets that send gentle electrical pulses through pads on your skin to "distract" pain signals. Popular ones made for periods include Ovira Noha and Livia. They're drug-free, reusable and discreet under clothes.

Cost: medium (one-time) ยท Not for people with pacemakers or during pregnancy without a doctor's OK.

6Magnesium & vitamin B6

๐ŸŒ— Some proof (mood, bloating)

Some small studies found magnesium, especially paired with vitamin B6, helped with PMS mood and water retention. Magnesium glycinate tends to be gentle on the stomach. You can also get magnesium from leafy greens, nuts, seeds and dark chocolate.

Too much B6 over a long time can cause nerve problems, so stay within label doses.

๐Ÿซ

7Chasteberry (vitex)

๐ŸŒ— Some proof (breast pain, irritability)

An herbal extract from the fruit of the chaste tree. Several studies suggest it may ease PMS symptoms like breast tenderness and irritability, though the quality of research varies.

Talk to a doctor first, especially if you use hormonal birth control, are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, or take mood medicines.

8Period underwear & menstrual cups

๐ŸŒฑ Comfort pick

These won't treat PMS, but they can make your period week a lot more comfortable and less stressful. Period underwear (like Thinx) absorbs flow without pads. Reusable cups (like Saalt) last for years and can save money over time.

Bonus: ginger tea ๐Ÿซ–. Several small studies suggest ginger may ease period cramps. It's cheap, cozy and worth a try.

The bottom line

Start simple: heat, a well-timed pain reliever, calcium and daily movement have the strongest research. Then add what fits your life, whether that's a chocolate ritual, a TENS device or a supplement. And if your symptoms are severe, a doctor can offer treatments no store shelf can.
