Food and PMS: what to eat the week before

October 20, 2026 ยท 5 min read ยท By the WePMS team

You don't need a strict diet to feel better during PMS. A few small swaps in the week before your period can ease bloating, steady your mood and calm those cravings.

Add more ๐Ÿ’š Ease off ๐Ÿ’— ๐Ÿฅ› Calcium foods๐Ÿฅฌ Magnesium greens๐ŸŒพ Whole grains๐Ÿ’ง Water ๐Ÿง‚ Salty snacksโ˜• Lots of caffeine๐Ÿท Alcohol๐Ÿฌ Sugar crashes

Foods worth adding

  • Calcium-rich foods like yogurt, milk, cheese, fortified plant milk and tofu. Calcium has the strongest research of any nutrient for PMS.
  • Magnesium-rich foods like spinach, pumpkin seeds, almonds, black beans and dark chocolate.
  • Complex carbs like oats, brown rice, sweet potatoes and whole-grain bread. They release energy slowly and may support serotonin, your "feel-good" brain chemical.
  • Water and water-rich foods like cucumber and watermelon. It sounds backwards, but drinking more water can actually help with bloating.

Foods to ease off

  • Salt makes your body hold water, which means more bloating.
  • Caffeine can make anxiety, irritability and breast soreness worse.
  • Alcohol can deepen low moods and disturb sleep.
  • Sugary snacks give a quick high and then a crash that can feel like a mood swing.
About cravings ๐Ÿซ: Cravings are normal, not a lack of willpower. Instead of fighting them, plan for them. A square of dark chocolate, a bowl of oatmeal with fruit, or a handful of nuts can satisfy without the crash.
